Letters (1861-1919) written to Charles and Martha (Quiner) Carpenter of Stockholm, Wis. by relatives. Four correspondents wrote while serving in the Civil War including George S. Lockwood (Co. A, 3rd Wis. Infantry), Sam G. Lockwood (Co. G, 20th Wis. Infantry), H. N. Brewer (Co. E, 28th Wis. Infantry), and Verdine Carpenter (Co. G, 16th Wis. Infantry). Their letters concern military and political events including the death of General Lyon, the Battle of Pittsburgh Landing, and the naval engagement off Fort Jackson. Remaining letters are primarily from Quiner and Ingalls family members and pertain to health and family matters. Martha Quiner Carpenter was the sister of Caroline Quiner Ingalls, the mother of author Laura Ingalls Wilder. An October 6th (no year) letter from Caroline discusses a scarlet fever epidemic and their hop plant harvest. Also included is correspondence and notes (1975-1977) concerning the donation of the letters which provides additional information about family members.
